Corps Commanders in Blue: Union Major Generals in the Civil War

Corps Commanders in Blue is a collection of essays edited by Ethan Rafuse that assesses the performance of eight Union Generals (Porter, Mansfield, Gilbert, Meade, McPherson, Franklin, Hooker, Hancock) during the Civil War. Instead of examining the entire career of the individual generals, the essays highlight a specific campaign or point of combat for each during the conflict. As with any work compiled from different authors, some of the essays are more readable than others, but overall the book is an interesting scholarly analysis of how each individual was able to effectively or ineffectively command an army corps.
